• Are you ready for all your analogue lines to be turned off?
  • Those digital lines of yours, the ISDN 30’s and 2’s ….yes those too are going!

PSTN Shutting Down

The Public Switched Telephone Network, has provided the backbone infrastructure of the UK’s communication network for decades.

From analogue lines to ISDN 2 and ISDN 30 ( who remembers DASS2 and DPNSS ? ) this catered for everyone from the people in a workshop with a single phone and a loud ringing bell to an office block housing over a thousand employees each with a phone number.

Now it is regarded as old technology, with equivalent and faster services being provided over the internet.

This is what BT have to say about it

By 2025 all analogue lines will be removed…so what is in its place?

By now many of you may have had your home phone line ‘upgraded’ to ‘digital voice’.

What this means is

Previously the old analogue signaling that provided your dial tone had your internet service laid over the top of that.

Now its a fully digital service down those wires and the telephone facility is provided by the router.

This means you cant just unplug it from the wall and plug your phone in – it wont work.

It also means if your router gets turned off, so does your phone line.

This is what the UK government has to say on this
